Green Smoothies: for grown-ups

My daily breakfast is not for the faint-hearted.

You may think.

It is, in fact, delicious.

My green smoothie may consist of 95% organic spinach, kale, celery or chard and therefore may seem a bit hardcore. But it's the tiny addition of sweetness - to appease my sweet-tooth - that actually softens its edges and turns it into what seems like a morning 'treat.'

I add half a pear, or a date, or a teaspoon of bee pollen to sweeten it. (Never all of those together as the sugar load will shoot my blood sugars way off kilter.) I also add high quality organic pea protein, and a half glass of filtered water.

This is in fact Day 5 of my 10-day green smoothie detox. I'm drinking two to three pints of green smoothie a day, plus a few raw, activated seeds and berries. And if i find I'm hungry for something else to munch on then I might make a raw salad with some home-made guacamole. And this is my daily food intake.

Now this may indeed seem a little hardcore. But this is a perfect cleansing regime to detoxify my system. It's a great way to give my digestive system, and my kidneys and liver, a well-deserved break.

It is also a great way to get a load of fibre into my gut. It's the fibre that goes a long way towards preventing all kinds of cancers, digestive issues, decreases the risk of diabetes, reduces cholesterol and heart disease, prevents gallstones and helps with weight loss (by giving a sense of fullness and less urge to overeat.)

Plus, the beauty of this is that I can do this whilst continuing with my life, working, looking after my children, and all the other demands that life brings. It's not strictly a fast and I have enough good nutrition to maintain my energy. Plus the smoothies are delicious.

As I've said before, diets are never a good idea. But a period of cleansing truly is.
